“We saw that the time was right to create a dedicated Home Theater Division” – Maria Costeira, CEO of Xpand 3D(DCinema Today, 2012)
XPand 3D Cinema System has been added to over 5000 movie theaters worldwide. You may have not heard of them before but it is more than likely that you have witnessed their technology while watching a movie at your local theater. 3D technology for the home has increased since 2010 when Samsung released the worlds first 3D LED HDTV. XPand has decided to introduce their 3D glasses for home theaters.
What makes these 3D glasses different is how they operate. 3D technology depends on stereopsis, (perception of depth produced by the reception in the brain of visual stimuli from both eyes in combination). The XPand technology uses alternating shuttering of the lenses. Since this is done so quickly, the human eye cannot tell. So while the right eye is blocked, the left is visible and when the left is blocked, the right is visible. These glasses are not the plastic disposable kind you receive at a movie theater. These 3D glasses start at $119.00. There are three styles to choose from, YOUniversal Electronic 3D Eyewear, Universal 3D Glasses, & DLP®-Link Edux 3D Glasses.
For the 3D glasses to work, the AE125 IR emitteris needed. By placing the emitter at the back of your home theater, the emitter projects to the screen. As this occurs, the signal then bounces off the screen directly to the 3D glasses.
There are three kits available:
1) The QC Cinema Kit includes: an AE125 Emitter, Mid-Range, Wide Angle-25 degrees, and 10 X103-C3 Infinity glasses.
2) The QC Pro Kit includes: an AE125 Emitter, Mid-Range, Wide Angle-25 degrees, and 10 X103-C1 Infinity Pro glasses.
3) The XPAND VIP Cinema Kit includes: an AE125 Emitter, Mid-Range, Wide Angle-25 degrees and 10 X104 LX1 YOUniversal Glasses.
For more information on XPand, please visit their website. With the popularity of home theaters and the popularity of 3D for the home increasing at such a rapid rate, XPand 3D could be an essential in 3D home theaters in the near future.
1) Raiders Of The Lost Ark, released in 1981, (retitled Indiana Jones & The Raiders of The Lost Ark in 1999), directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by George Lucas, and starring Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The film is based in 1936 and shows Indiana fighting off a group of Nazi’s who are in search of the Ark Of The Covenant. For the Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures Blu-ray, original sound designer Ben Burtt has preserved the sound of the film from his original master mix. All new stereo sounds were created using the original music tracks and effects that were originally done in mono. The original negatives were scanned at 4K and then carefully examined frame by frame to repair any damages that may have occurred since 1981.
“The Crowson TES 100 is the next generation of tactile effects for home theater systems. The bass shaker era has ended, and the age of the TES 100 has begun.” - Matthew Washam, Sr. Editor of Home Theater Spot
We are proud to offer, as a premium option, the Crowson TES 100 (Tactile Effects System) to each of our models. Crowson offers the world’s only audiophile low grade frequency motion.
The Crowson Linear Actuator is placed on the floor, underneath the seat. The actuator expands and contracts to move the chair giving you actual motion, not just a bass vibration. We take it a step further and place the actuator within the arm of the seat to keep it out of sight. The weight of the chair compresses the actuator and your entire seat vibrates once the low frequency sound is detected.
This does not replace your sub-woofer, it enhances the sound. With the Crowson TES 100, there is no need to put your sub-woofer at maximum capacity. If you live in an apartment you will be subjected to other tenants bass or you will have complaints against your own. This occurs when your sub-woofer is at a maximum capacity in order to feel the vibration. The actuators in the TES eliminate that issue because your chair is directly affected by the motion resulting in a lower bass level for those around. Each chair also has its own volume control.

The 2012 Summer Olympics in London start on July 27th. On July 20th, reports surfaced regarding the games to be televised in 3D to over 80% of the households in the USA. AT&T U-Verse, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS, and eleven other cable providers will broadcast these games via NBC with 3D technology courtesy of Panasonic. A full listing of all cable service providers can be seen by clicking here.
Due to the time difference in England, all televised games in North America will be delayed. However the 3D coverage will be delayed by an extra 24 hours. Panasonic states NBC decided to delay the 3D broadcasts for business reasons, not technical issues. Olympics enthusiasts who must watch the games right away may not want to wait an extra 24 hours to watch these events in 3D. Since the 3D games will be shown on a different channel, we don’t understand why they can’t play both the 2D and 3D broadcasts simultaneously.
The events scheduled to be broadcast in 3D are:
- Opening and Closing Ceremonies - Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics - Selected Indoor Swimming and Diving Events - Bicycle Racing - Track and Field Events from the main Olympic Stadium
The total running time for the 2012 Olympics is 242 hours, (12 hours per day). The opening ceremonies will take place on July 27 while the closing ceremonies will be on August 12. A full listing of each sporting event can be seen here.
Last week while on Twitter, somebody tweeted they were watching Donnie Brasco for the first time. We briefly tweeted back and forth about how amazing that movie is and realized just how great mafia movies are. Today we would like to mention some of our favourite movies of that genre.
1. The Godfather is considered to be the best mafia/mobster/gangster movie ever made. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, James Caan, & Robert Duvall are just a handful of the spectacular cast in this movie. With a running time of 175 minutes, (five minutes short of three hours!), The Godfather is simply a masterpiece. Marlon Brando plays Victor Corleone who is the “don” of the Corleone family. Al Pacino plays Michael Corleone, Victor’s son who then takes over for the family after Victor passes away. The Godfather showed everyone how the mafia operates from the gangsters perspective. Critics love this movie and consider it to be the best of its genre and to some, the best movie ever made. There were two sequels, The Godfather: Part 2 & The Godfather Part 3 all which follow the family as it changes leaders and all the trials and tribulations of the mafia lifestyle. All three movies are a must see.
2. Scarface also stars Al Pacino playing the role of Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee that takes over the underworld of Miami. This is a remake of the 1932 movie with the same name. Tony Montana and his best friend, Manny Ribera (Steven Bauer) overtake the criminal world in Miami in a short amount of time. They arrive from Cuba without any money and work there way up the underground ladder. They start off as dishwashers in a small restaurant and quickly go from carrying out hits on people to having their own empire. Scarfaceshows the rise and fall of a crime lord. He loses his wife, best friend (which Tony shoots), his workers, and in the end, he loses his life. Scarface runs for a total of 170 minutes, just ten minutes shy of three hours.
3. Pulp Fiction written by Quentin Tarantino was a surprise hit when it was first released. Starring Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Travolta (who’s career was rejuvenated because of his role as Vincent Vega). Pulp Fictionis structured around three different stories that all tie in together however since Quentin Tarantino favours a non-linear narrative, each story is out of sequence. Violence, suggestive language, and humour all play a vital role in this movie. The banter between Vincent Vega (Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Jackson) leaves you laughing uncontrollably, ironic since they are both hitmen. There is so much going on in this movie one has to watch it to understand how brilliant it really is. The soundtrack, the funny one-liners, and the characters will instantly make this one of your favourite movies. Most of us learned what a “quarter-pounder with cheese” is called in France because of Pulp Fiction.
4. Donnie Brasco, based on a true story, stars Johnny Depp as Donnie Brasco, (real name Joe Pistone) who is an undercover FBI agent sent to infiltrate the New York Bonanno crime family. Donnie is a jewel “expert” and wins the respect of Lefty Ruggiero, played by none other than acting legend, Al Pacino. Lefty vouches for Donnie and is allowed into their network. As the story unfolds, Donnie becomes more intertwined in the underground world and becomes more like Donnie the gangster than Joe the FBI agent. The FBI decide they have enough evidence to charge the Bonanno family with crimes of extortion, gambling, and murder. They abruptly stop the undercover sting and get Joe out of harms way. The acting and the story in Donnie Brasco is so intriguing and so intense, you will feel sorry for Lefty by the end of the movie.
5. Carlito’s Way also stars Al Pacino as Carlito Brigante. Sean Penn, Penelope Ann Miller, John Leguizamo, and Luis Guzman star alongside Al Pacino is this mafia movie classic. Carlito is a Puerto Rican ex-con that vows to lead a clean lifestyle. Once he is out of prison, Carlito decides to own a night club from money he took from a drug deal that went wrong and finds himself back in the life of crime. Carlito reluctantly assists in a prison break that also goes the wrong way. He then decides it’s best to leave town with his girlfriend, Gail, (played by Penelope Ann Miller). A chase ensues as Italian gangsters go after Carlito. We don’t want to give the ending away so we will stop here but it is highly recommended to watch this movie. Al Pacino gives another great performance.
There are so many great mafia movies to watch in your home theater. These five are just some of our favourites of this genre. If you have not seen any of these or have only seen a few, we recommend a night in with any of these five choices.
Apple has been a leader in technology over the past ten years. The iPod revolutionized how people listen to music. In 2007 they released the iPhone which changed the cellular phone industry. In 2010 the iPad was released and the world fell in love with tablets. When rumours started to generate around a new HDTV manufactured by Apple, people took notice.
A few weeks back, we had a feature on Apple TV, the rumoured iTV is completely different. The iTV is a full functioning HDTV that is believed to revolutionize standard TV’s. Apple TV is a box that you connect to a standard TV and the iTV takes everything to a whole new level. The iTV is rumoured to have an iOS just like the iPhone & iPad and you could use either as a remote. Currently Apple TV enables you to stream your iTunes content and the internet, (YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter) on to your TV, this is also to be the same with the iTV. Since there aren’t solid facts regarding the iTV, nobody is sure if you can connect to the internet through Wi-Fi or through a cable system.
The screen sizes are to be 37″, 42″ and 50″. The picture above is not the actual iTV, this is a mock up. A built in camera would allow you to take pictures as well as the ability to use Skype. The iTV is said to be touch screen and would also have the ability to detect your movement from a distance, similar to the Samsung Smart TV. If the rumours become fact, one will be able to use hand motions without the use of the remote or without touching the screen itself. The iTV would be a fully functioning HDTV with full internet capabilities.
The price is supposed to start at $1499. The release date has changed since the rumours began. Some are stating a late 2012 or early 2013 date. It would be in the best interest for Apple to release the iTV close to the Christmas shopping season. If the iTV is a reality, this will cannibalize the existing Apple TV shortly after. We are excited about the possibility of the iTV because it will enhance our home theater experience, just like the iPhone changed how we communicate with one another. Maybe Siri will be the main way to communicate verbally with your iTV? Right now it’s all speculation and we cannot wait to see what Apple introduces to all of us.

The date today is Friday July 13th, 2012, aka Friday the 13th. We want to take a look at the successful horror movies series of the same name, Friday the 13th. This horror movie series has been so successful one cannot think of this date or a hockey mask without thinking of these movies. Since 1980, Paramount Pictures and New Line Cinemas have released twelves movies and grossed over $665 million. Let’s celebrate today’s date with a Friday the 13th movie marathon in our home theaters.
The Friday the 13th movies love to scare the viewer especially the original. When this movie was released in 1980, critics hated it yet the public loved it. The movie cost $500,000 to make and grossed $60 million worldwide. What most people forget about the original movie is that Jason Voorhees was not the killer. The killer was his mother, Pamela Voorhees. She goes on a killing spree because her son, Jason, drowned in Crystal Lake due to negligent camp counselors. The ending sequence of the movie has ranked as number 31 on Bravo’s100 Scariest Movie Moments. If you haven’t seen it, we won’t ruin the surprise but be warned, regardless of what age you are, it will frighten you.
Pamela Voorhees was decapitated in the original movie by a camp counselor. Jason Voorhees takes the leading role in the second, third, and fourth sequels. His motivation to kill is based on the death of his mother. He is out for revenge on any camp counselor he sees. The iconic hockey mask made its appearance in the third sequel which by the way, was in 3D. While killing a camp counselor, Jason finds the mask and decides to wear it to hide his deformed face. Jason goes on a killing spree in part 2, 3, & 4 and yes he is “killed” in each one yet comes back time and time again until part 4. He does end up dying and we do not see Jason in part 5, “The New Beginning”. A paramedic decides to take Jason’s place after he witnesses his sons dead body.
1986 ushered Part 6, “Jason Lives” is where the franchise takes a dramatic turn. Jason is brought back to life and possessed by something evil which enables him to have super-human strength and immortality. We see Jason back to his regular activities through part 6 and 7. While part 8, “Jason Takes Manhattan”, is considered one of the weakest of the series amongst movie fans, this movie has it’s die-hard cult like following. It is weird to see Jason on a boat and roaming the streets of Manhattan. An interesting side note about part 8, the budget to film in Manhattan increased during filming so in order to keep costs low, scenes were changed throughout the movie. This explains why most of the killings were done on a boat and Jason does not actually arrive in Manhattan till very late in the movie. BTW, Manhattan is actually Vancouver, (another way to cut production costs). There are a few scenes in Times Square but besides that, not much is filmed there.
In 1993, Part 9 was to be the “Final Friday”, and end to the franchise. New Line Cinemas took over at the helm of Paramount Pictures. “Jason Goes To Hell:The Final Friday” sounds like a phenomenal movie but really falls short of greatness. Jason is seen in the opening sequence where he is killed once again. This time, his body is so badly damaged, that his demonic soul starts possessing other bodies. Throughout the movie, Jason’s soul possess various people and we see them killing instead of our hockey mask, machete wielding leading star. He does return right near the end where he is sent to hell. The best part of the movie is the final sequence. The camera focuses on the hockey mask on the ground and out of nowhere, the famous glove of Freddy Krueger from the “A Nightmare on Elm St.”franchise drags the mask underground, aka “to hell”. Freddy was sent to hell just a few years before in that franchise. This scene caused numerous conversations for years to come. Horror fans wanted a Freddy vs. Jason type movie. What we did get was the resurrection of Jason but not with Freddy. It was Jason….in space.
2002 introduced “Jason X” (aka Friday the 13th, part 10). The film did not have the continuity of the series. Jason is seen alive, chained up on display. He is not in hell and looks much better than he did before he died in part 9. Once he is free he accidentally damages a cryonic pod which leaks cryonic fluid and freezes himself as well as the person he was trying to kill. Fast-forward to the year 2455 and a group of students from “Earth 2″ visit our Earth to find these two frozen bodies. In “Jason X”, Earth becomes so polluted that the inhabitants are all but dead which is why Earth 2 has become home for humans. Jason wakes up on a spaceship and starts his shenanigans once again. Once alive, he is ambushed and falls against a damaged medical station which can reanimate non-living beings. Jason gets transformed into a cyborg and has an updated look for the new millennium, (as seen in the picture to the left). Everyone thought that Jason will have a series of movies with this upgraded model, we were wrong.
2003, one short year after Jason X was released, the wait was over for horror movie fans. Freddy vs. Jason hit the box office with success as the opening weekend grossed over $36 million. Overall, the movie grossed $82.5 million making this showdown a great success. Freddy Krueger battles Jason Voorhees and kill innocent people along the way. For Jason fans, this movie was a bit more on the Nightmare side than it was the Friday side. This is an entertaining movie and it was great to see Jason back on the big screen. Who actually wins this battle is unsure. The final sequence shows an all out battle to the death. We see Jason rise out of Crystal Lake holding Freddy’s head and Freddy is also alive. With an ending like this, part 2 was on fans minds. Once again, what was delivered next was not what was expected.
In 2009, Friday the 13th had a reboot. A remake of the classic original movie was released to theaters. Since Jason was not featured in the original movie, skeptics were not happy about this reboot. Thankfully, the movie was made with elements of the first three. We see Pamela being killed, Jason with the original burlap sack he wore to hide his face and then we see him discovering the mask. The only element that was hard to get used to was that he is back to being human and not possessed by the devil. If we ignore the series from part 6-10, this movie can be enjoyed. I think it was well done and glad it was remade. With the success of the new The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Rob Zombie’s brilliant Halloween, it was inevitable that Jason would also be remade.
Here we are now, Friday July 13, 2012 and the Friday the 13th franchise comes full circle. From the original with Pamela Voorhees, Jason going to hell than space, battling Freddy, and now the series has a reboot for new and old fans to enjoy. Tonight would be a great reason to have a Friday the 13th movie marathon and enjoy all twelve, however if you cannot sit through approximately eighteen hours of Jason, you could pick from some of the best in this franchise. The original movie is a must see; you will not be disappointing. Part 3, 6, 10, Freddy vs. Jason, and the 2009 reboot will give you hours of entertainment today. A home theater setting with the Friday the 13th movies is the kind of evening I love to have. Enjoy these great movies tonight. Some might scare you and some might make you laugh. We do know it will enhance your home theater experience.
A home theater is a significant investment and home theater seating consists of many factors that make up a high quality recliner. We pride ourselves in giving our customer the highest quality product. Here is what to look for when purchasing your home theater seating with Elite HTS.
Total weight of traditional theater chairs are approximately 75 – 100 lbs. Usually this means the chair has been constructed poorly using “thin wall” wood construction. We have the heaviest chairs available weighing in at 152 lbs. Since we use 3/4″ thick wall framing construction and the industrial grade recliner mechanism, our chairs are durable and built to last.
The quality of the foam is important as low quality foam can lose form and support in three months. Foam should be high in density and supportive while still soft and comfortable to use. We offer soft, medium, and firm foam options in order for you to customize the chair that best suits your needs. Many people suffer from lower back issues so it is of great importance to have lower back lumbar support. You will be sitting in this chair for a lengthy amount of time. It’s best to ensure you are comfortable.
Regular theater seats have a simple reclining system where the seat cushion does not move and the back of the seat reclines. Significant wall clearance is required for these seats. Look for a wall hugger, A wall hugger moves the seat cushion down and forward while the seat back reclines backwards Only 4″ of clearance space is needed with this system. Ensure the recliner mechanism is of high quality by its thick steel arms, reinforced steel bracing, and a smooth reclining motion. Poorly designed reclining mechanisms are the total opposites.
Low quality theater chairs are made with cheap materials. Rejected plywood/wood and regular nails that aren’t strong or thick enough will give a theater chair a short life. We use a combination of fitted joints, screws, and glue to construct our frames. Since most arms are reinforced near the base, they can crack and break at the joint which will cause the arm to become shaky. We reinforce the arms of our chairs at the highest point we possibly can to prevent any cracking or shaking.
Warranty within the industry runs from one to two years. We have a ten year warranty program to ensure our customers are taken care of for many years after their purchase. Since home theater seating is an investment, we ensure you are taken care of every step of the way. While purchasing your home theater seating, please follow these important elements to ensure you get the highest quality product you deserve.

Sony has introduced their newest projector, the VPL-VW1000ES. The 4K resolution, 3D home theater projector retails for a hefty $24,999.
The 4K resolution means that the projector is more than four times the resolution of the current highest quality projector which is 1980 x 1080 pixels. The VPL-VW1000ES is 4096 x 2160, vastly superior than any projector currently on the market. The VPL-VW1000ES has excellent 3D and has support of the DCI color space, which is the standard used in the movie theaters. These two features create an impressive image.
Weighing in at 44 lbs, this projector can be mounted on the ceiling like standard projectors. There are also small screw-on feet to level the projector on the ground. The set-up menus are very easy to use, even though there are plenty of setting to get used to, the system is very user friendly. Considering how many picture options are available, it may be time consuming at first. Sony states the viewer can sit closer to the screen as there is no “screen door effect”. Last but not least, the projector has a whisper quiet fan so you will not be distracted by a loud fan while you use this projector.
ProjectorReviews.com reviews approximately 25 home theater projectors per year and in 2012, Sony was awarded the Outstanding Product of the Year Award. This may take a few years to catch on as it seems Sony has gone above and beyond that of their competition. Blu-Ray players cannot support such high resolution so trying to watch anything of such high quality isn’t available just yet. Other forms of technology that coincide with this projector will be able to accommodate such high resolution in the near future. The competition will have to catch up.
Engadget.com has pictures of the VPL-VW1000ES, to view please click here.
