TV on Blu-ray: The Complete Friends Collection

November 16th, 2012

Chandler, Monica, Joey, Phoebe, Ross and Rachel made up the hugely successful sitcom, Friends which ran from 1994 till 2004. With 236 episodes, 90 hours of laughs, 21 Blu-ray discs, and 17 hours of bonus features, The Complete Series on Blu-ray is just in time for the holiday season.

Jennifer AnistonCourteney Cox. Lisa KudrowMatt LeBlancMatthew Perry, and David Schwimmer gave us some of the best moments in sitcom history. The One with Joey’s Bag, The One with Ross’ Teeth, The One with the Holiday Armadillo, and The One with Joey’s New Brain are all included in this highly anticipated Blu-ray collection. Friends will always be remembered for having such a stellar cast with unforgettable TV moments.

For a listing of all 236 episodes please click here (courtesy of TV.com). Along with all 236 episodes on the first 20 discs and their respective bonus features, it’s disc 21 with all the additional bonus features. Here is a rundown of what you will find:

Additional Bonus Features: Disc 21

1) Friends from the Start (HD, 28 minutes): The first of three high definition documentaries, “Friends from the Start” finds crucial members of the crew and a handful of supporting actors — executive producers Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, director James Burrows, network executive Warren Littlefield, former president of Warner Bros. Television Leslie Moonves, producer Todd Stevens, art director John Shaffner, costume designer Debra McGuire, and actors Elliott Gould, Christina Pickles, Melora Hardin and James Michael Tyler — coming together eight years after the end of the series to discuss the genesis of the show, its development, sets, storylines, characters and more. It’s a great retrospective, but the main cast is sadly MIA. No Aniston, Perry, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc or Schwimmer, except in the endless clips that litter the proceedings.

2) When Friends Become Family (HD, 29 minutes): Bright, Kauffman, Crane, Burrows, Littlefield, Stevens, Shaffner, McGuire, Gould, Pickles, Hardin and Tyler return — along with writer Greg Malins, audience warm-up artist Jim Bentley and actors Maggie Wheeler, Bonnie Somerville and Alexandra Holden — to cover the show’s runaway success, its ongoing evolution, and the secret behind its endurance and influence. Still no sign of the main cast, though, which would have rocketed the 21st disc’s documentaries to heights unknown.

3) The Legacy of Friends (HD, 11 minutes): “If you know it’s the end, you’re writing toward a finish line.” This tenth and final season retrospective brings satisfying closure to the documentaries, although without any fresh faces. Even so, it’s a nice, heartfelt trip back through time.

4) Friends on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (SD, 22 minutes): Jay sits down with Schwimmer, LeBlanc and Matthew Perry (in Central Perk no less) moments after the actors watched the final episode for the first time. A few minutes later, he invites Aniston, Kudrow and Courtney Cox into the spotlight. Finally, with six minutes to spare, the entire cast shares the stage.

 5) Music Video (SD, 3 minutes): “I’ll Be There for You,” courtesy of The Rembrandts.

 6) The One Where Rachel Tells Ross (SD, 23 minutes): Shortly after 9/11, a pre-recorded scene with a bomb joke left the producers with little choice but to alter the episode in which it appeared. For the first time, see the original producer’s version of “The One Where Rachel Tells Ross” and read the original script.

7) Gag Reel (SD, 7 minutes): “The One with Never-Before-Seen Gags.”

8) Friends Visits The Ellen DeGeneres Show (SD, 16 minutes): Daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres welcomes Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer (separately but in good spirits).

The official press release can be seen here.

With the holiday season approaching, expect to see more special editions of your favourite TV shows, movies, and concerts on Blu-ray.

Netflix Connections For Home Theater Systems

November 5th, 2012

Home theater enthusiasts that use Netflix through their Blu-ray players or PS3 systems have asked us questions on Twitter as to how they should connect to the internet. Some of our  Twitter followers were using the systems built in wireless systems but their signals are usually weak and they lose their connection.

We recommend using the Ethernet port on Blu-ray players and PS3 systems. By connecting directly to your modem with an Ethernet cable, you will get direct access to your internet connection. The last thing you want to have to fight with during a movie would be your internet connection because of a failed Wifi connection. Using your Ethernet port will eliminate any dropped Wifi connections.

Netflix has become increasingly popular because of their large catalogue of movies and TV shows that are right at your fingertips. We recommend using Netflix as it can add to your library of movies and TV shows to watch in the comfort of your home theater.

With DVD rental locations becoming non existent unless you use one of those kiosks and vending machines that can be found in malls and in 7-11′s, Netflix can really help those of you that would rather rent instead of buying DVD’s. The choices are substantial and it’s very user-friendly. Now using your Ethernet connection you can ensure you will not be interrupted watching the movie or TV show of your choice.

We always appreciate your comments and feedback so contact through FacebookTwitteremail or by phone.

The Star Wars Saga

November 2nd, 2012

The big news this past Tuesday regarding one of the most popular movies ever made shocked many die hard Star Wars fans. Disney purchases Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and announces a seventh movie will be made and a new trilogy will be forthcoming.

George Lucas stated the following: “It’s now time for me to pass ‘Star Wars’ on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that ‘Star Wars‘ could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, ‘Star Wars’ will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

George Lucas explains his reason to sell to Disney in the clip below.

Disney has promised a release of episode seven in 2015 much to the joy and anger of many fans. The stories floating around right now are stating the next trilogy will not be based on pre-established material and will be a true “original story”. Speculation is all over the internet with people wondering which characters will be in the new trilogy and who will star in these films. Star Wars has been a pop culture icon since it first set the movie industry ablaze in 1977.  The first three movies were instant classics then in the 1990′s the prequel trilogy was released. Some fans weren’t happy about that but once they were released, these movies also became instant classics.

Disney will ensure the Star Wars legacy remains intact and the new trilogy will be just as exciting as the six movies that came before it. A new generation of fans will be able to enjoy what  Disney has to offer. For now, we have six of the most beloved movies to ever hit the silver screen to enjoy. This weekend, with all the buzz about Star Wars, it’s a good time to sit back and enjoy some of these great films.

Front Projections

October 29th, 2012

With TV screens becoming increasingly bigger each year, the importance of a front projector is still valid for home entertainment and home theater systems. Previously, we have discussed home theater projectors, the ViewSonic Hybrid-Projector and the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema. We had some enquiries from people on Twitter asking us if we still find projectors valid since the market has these huge hi-def TV’s. Each answer was the same, yes we do.

Projectors price points vary. $2000 and up to $25,000. It depends on the style of projector you want so we do not have a definitive answer as to how much one should spend. That is up to you and the quality you are looking for. Buy the projector that best suits your screen size and budget. There are well made budget priced projectors so if your budget isn’t too high, no need to worry. You can still purchase a decent projector and do not have to spend $25,000.  The clip below is from CEDIA 2012.

Below is a review of the Acer H6500 DLP Projector.

Tekzilla did a quick look at  Optoma’s Wifi enabled LED Projectors as seen in the clip below

The Projector Blog is a great resource for the latest and greatest in home theater projectors. We enjoy reading their views and insight and recommend you to also read what they have to say. Hi-Def TV’s are great but the experience of a projector creates a greater theater experience in your home. Ultimately what ever suits you best is your ultimate choice. We also love the new styles and technology in TV’s nowadays so we are fans of both. Projectors have improved a lot over the years and we suggest looking into one for your home theater.

Halloween Favourites (Part 2 of 2)

October 26th, 2012

On October 18th, we did our first part of our look at halloween movie favourites and with this being the official halloween weekend (all the parties will be this Saturday), we are now going to feature some of the best scary movies for you to enjoy. Last week we featured paranormal and supernatural movies and this will we will be looking at some of the best slasher movies ever to hit the silver screen. There are so many great slasher flicks so it’s not easy to list them all. Here you will find some that are great for this time of year.

Halloween (2007 reboot directed by Rob Zombie): Michael Myers is one of the most frightening serial killers to grace the horror movie genre and Rob Zombie’s reboot put this franchise into another zone. Rob Zombie’s 2007 reboot shows you how Michael Myers became the psycho we all enjoy to watch. This version is graphic and the scenes can make some people very scared. A perfect halloween movie!

Friday The 13th (all 12): Jason Vorhees, everyones favourite hockey mask wearing serial killer entertains in all twelve movies in this franchise. We had a blog on the franchise back in July (Friday the 13th, 2012) which can be viewed here. Since 1980, the Friday The 13th franchise has delighted horror movie fans and given halloween season something to look forward to. Regardless of which one you watch, you will be entertained from start to finish. One of the most famous movies would be Freddy vs. Jason (yes they battle!)

The Last House On The Left (1972): This is the movie that started the slasher genre. Yes the 2009 reboot was good but this 1972 classic is the one to watch. When this was first released, it scared the living pants off of movie goers. We guarantee that 39 years later, this movie will creep you out even more than the reboot.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): We all enjoy the 2003 reboot however the original is fascinating. Psycho chainsaw killer Leatherface was in all his glory in the original version. This is not a true story however the marketing behind this movie was so well done that people thought it was true. To this day, I am worried about driving through Texas! If you want to be scared this halloween, do yourself a favour and watch this version.

A Nightmare On Elm Street (All 9 of them): Freddy Kruger, the razor blade glove wearing teen killer only attacks you in your dreams. So if you are easily scared you may not want to watch any of these because if you dream about it, you may think he will be after you! The 2010 reboot had elements of greatness but if you really want to enjoy this franchise, stick with the original eight. The original is a fan favourite and that is highly recommended (see the trailer below). Don’t forget that Freddy vs. Jason pits Freddy Kruger and Jason Vorhees for an all out battle.

So here are some of the best slasher movies to scare you this halloween season. With the blog from last week, part 1 featuring paranormal halloween movie favourites, you have great movies to watch for the first time or for some of you, once again. Please ensure you are a fan of this genre as these movies are not for everyone. Have a safe and happy halloween weekend everyone.
