Holiday Movie Classics (part 1)

November 24th, 2012

We are officially in the holiday season which means it’s time to enjoy classic holiday movies once again. With the US Thanksgiving this past Thursday and the ever so popular Black Friday shopping the following day, we are now officially able to watch holiday movies while enjoying our favourite peppermint mochas and other tasty holiday drinks. We will be inundated with Christmas movies for the next four weeks. Here are some of our picks to kick off the season!

1) It’s A Wonderful Life: Probably the most popular Christmas movie ever to be made. The movie surrounds George Bailey (James Stewart) decides to commit suicide on Christmas Eve only to be stopped by an angel that shows George how life would be if he was never born. This movie can give you perspective on life and is an extremely uplifting movie for the entire family.

To purchase this from Amazon, click here.

2) Christmas Vacation: The quirky and hilarious Christmas Vacation brings the Griswold family (Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo) together to celebrate the holidays. Disaster after disaster, this movie will make you laugh from start to finish.

To purchase this from Amazon, click here.

3) Home Alone: The original Home Alone is another holiday favourite with everyone in your entire household. When Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left at home while his family goes to Paris for the holidays, Kevin defends his home from two slapstick burglars played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Even though the sequel is good and also takes place at Christmas time, the original is still the best out of this franchise.

To purchase this from Amazon, click here.

4) ElfWill Ferrell plays an oversized elf that is sent to New York City to meet his biological father. This movie is 9 years old and already has become a holiday classic. You will see this on TV alot over the next few weeks. It’s a funny and cute movie.

To purchase this from Amazon, click here.

5) The Santa ClauseTim Allen accidentally kills Santa Claus and has to take over his duties. This movie doesn’t stray too far from the TV show Home Improvement but it’s still a great movie to watch this holiday season.

To purchase this from Amazon, click here.

Over the next few weeks we will feature other holiday classics. There are so many to choose from. Rest asured, whichever movie you watch this season, it will lift your  holiday spirits. What a great way to spend the holidays with your loved ones as you watch a great movie in your home theater.  As they say, it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

Titanic – 15th Anniversary Blu-ray 3D

September 7th, 2012

The Titanic Blu-ray 3D DVD will be released on September 10, 2012. Fifteen years after its release, Titanic has been upgraded to meet our current needs of home theater technology. Directed by James Cameron, this blockbuster movie has made approximately $2.2 billion worldwide. In the spring of 2012, Titanic 3D was released in theaters. You can now view the biggest grossing movie of all time in 3D in the comfort of your own home and home theater.

Three versions will be released on September 10th. A 2 disc DVD, a 4 disc Blu-ray DVD Combo Pack, and the 4 disc Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray DVD Combo Pack. Titanic will also be available on demand and digital download. According to Blu-ray.com, the 3D upgrade “earns a stunning 3D conversion”. The initial release of Titanic was visually stunning and the 3D conversion has enhanced the quality perfectly.

The Blu-ray is filled with bonus content, over two and a half hours of never before seen footage. There is the standard audio commentary as well as two documentaries, “Reflections on Titanic” which clocks in just a few seconds under one hour and four minutes and “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron“, at one hour and thirty-six minute in length . If you like deleted scenes, there are over fifty three minutes for you to enjoy. The extras don’t end there either. Various segments that include the construction timelapse, deep down dive footage, videomatics, visual effects, TV spots, trailers, still galleries, Titanic parodies, and the music video for Celine Dion’sMy Heart Will Go On“.

Over the past two months, we’ve done blogs on home theater 3D technology and equipment. This past Wednesday’s blog, (Septenber 5),  “The New Sony 4K TV” featured the new XBR-84X900 4K TV from Sony and from July 9th, we discussed The New Sony 3D VPL-VW1000ES Projector. We all know 3D technology has been a welcomed addition to home theaters while the content available hasn’t been as exciting as the technology itself. With Titanic and its 3D upgrade, we have a movie perfectly made for this emerging new home theater technology.

You can pre-order the Blu-ray 3D DVD Combo Pack of  Titanic from Amazon, (just click here).

Back To School: Legendary School Movies

August 31st, 2012

The last long weekend of the summer is here which also means it’s back-to-school time as well. Some of the best Hollywood movies ever made have been based in school. There are so many “coming of age” teenage/school movies such as Grease, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Superbad, American Pie, American Graffitti, Dazed and Confused, National Lampoon’s Animal House, 16 Candles, Detroit Rock City, Old School, and probably the biggest teenage/school movie ever, The Breakfast Club. We’ve picked the best of this genre from the last five decades, from the 1970′s to present day. If you plan on staying in and enjoying the last long weekend of the summer of 2012, here are some movie choices for you.

National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978): Directed by John Landis and starring John Belushi, Mark Metcalf, & Kevin Bacon. Based in the 1960′s, this movie focuses on a group of misfit college fraternity kids that challenge the dean of their college. When two freshman try to join the Omega frat, they are instead pledged into Delta House, a frat known for their unorthodox rejects who are on the fringes of the “respectable” side of college. Toga parties, road trips, excessive drinking, and other misadventures run rampant throughout this classic. National Lampoon’s Animal House is a tribute to people who are picked on, ridiculed, and not accepted into regular society. (instant video via Amazon or purchase via Amazon here)

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986): Directed by John Hughes and starring Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, and Mia Sara. Ferris, played by Matthew Broderick sets out to have a day off while skipping school. He convinces his girlfriend, Sloane (played by Mia Sara) and his best friend Cameron, (played by Alan Ruck), to also skip classes and head into downtown Chicago. This movie was ground-breaking because it showed Ferris speaking directly to the camera as he explained his thoughts and techniques on how to manipulate his situation. From baseball games, to singing “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles in a parade, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a fun movie showing you the perspective of a teenage kid who enjoys having some fun. (instant video via Amazon or purchase via Amazon here)

Dazed and Confused (1993): Directed by Richard Linklater and a cast full of soon to be (at that time), stars with Jason London, Milla Jovovich, Ben AffleckAdam Goldberg, & Matthew McConaughey in one of his greatest roles as David Wooderson. Dazed and Confused is set in the last day of school in June of 1976. Dazed and Confused was not a box office smash yet has become a cult classic with so many distinctive quotes. The clothing, the cars, and the soundtrack are all authentic 1970′s so if you didn’t know it was made in 1993, you would think it was from the 70′s. If you were a teenager in the 1970′s this movie will bring back memories and if you weren’t a teenager back in the 1970 ‘s, Dazed and Confused will make you wish you were.  (instant video via Amazon or purchase via Amazon here)

Superbad (2007): Directed by Greg Mottola and starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Seth Rogen, & Emma Stone.  Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) are two high school seniors set out to win over the girls they like at a party thrown by Jules (Emma Stone). The saviour of the movie is Fogell, aka McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), the geeky kid that gets a fake ID to buy alcohol for the big party. If you’re offended by vulgar language and adolescent behaviour than Superbad is not the movie for you however this is one of the movies that has so many great scenes and great lines that you will find yourself laughing uncontrollably. (instant video via Amazon or purchase via Amazon here)

The Breakfast Club (1985): Directed by John Hughes and starring Judd NelsonMolly RingwaldEmilio EstevezAnthony Michael HallAlly Sheedy, & Paul Gleason. No other teen movie has captured the attention of a genre like The Breakfast Club. One of the most popular hits from a soundtrack, “Don’t You Forget About Me’ by Simple Minds is from this movie. Five kids are in detention on a Saturday, all five from total different backgrounds, and all forced to spend the day in the library together. This movie is hilarious and an absolute time piece from the 1980′s. With it’s humor, there are some serious  issues dealt with.  Domestic issues, stereo-types, teenage struggles, teenage crushes, and teens looking for a sense of belonging make The Breakfast Club a multi-generational movie. This movie is considered to be the best of its genre and after twenty-seven years, The Breakfast Club is still as popular as it was back in 1985. A classic to say the least. (instant video via Amazon or purchase via Amazon here) The video clip below features the hit song “Don’t You Forget About Me’ by Simple Minds.
