There’s More To Hockey Than The NHL

September 19th, 2012

On September 15, 2012 the NHL once again locked out the players because of a dispute over the CBA, (Collective Bargaining Agreement). The NHLPA, the union representing the players, has stated the lockout was not their decision and the owners are to blame. Regardless of who is at fault we are now witnessing the third lockout in the NHL since the 1994-1995 season was cut short for the exact same reason. Once the summer is over, sports fans are excited because the NFL and the NHL are gearing up for a new season. NFL fans are sighing a bit of relief as their season was in jeopardy over issues with the officials. The issue is not resolved at all, luckily the NFL was able to get amateur officials to step in. NHL aren’t as lucky. Fans around the league are upset and fed up and they have every right to feel this way. However, there is an alternative to watching the NHL games. If you’re a fan of the game of hockey you can resort to other leagues who can be just as exciting.

Alternate Leagues Include But Not Exclusive To:

CHL: The Canadian Hockey League is an umbrella league consisting of three leagues, WHL (Western Hockey League), OHL (Ontario Hockey League), & QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League).

1) WHL: The Western Hockey League consists of twenty-two teams. Vancouver Giants, Everett Silvertips, Brandon Wheatkings, Seattle Thunderbirds, & Kamloops Blazers make up a handful of the teams in this league. Regionally from Oregon and Washington state in the US and from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in Canada.

2) OHL: The Ontario Hockey League consists of twenty teams. London Knights, Barrie Colts, Ottawa 67′s, Sarnia Sting, & Sudbury Wolves are some of the teams in this league. Every team in this league resides in the province of Ontario, Canada.

3) QMJHL: The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League consists of eighteen teams. Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, Moncton Wildcats, Quebec Remparts, P.E.I. Rocket, & Saint John Sea Dogs make up a handful of the teams in this league. Regionally,, QMJHL cover the Canadian regions of Quebec, P.E.I, New Brunswick, & Nova Scotia.

AHL: The American Hockey League consists of thirty teams. Abbotsford Heat, Toronto Marlies, Adirondack Phantoms, Grand Rapids Griffins, & Texas Stars are just some of the teams in this league. The AHL covers BC, New Foundland, & Ontario in Canada and the American states have teams in New Hampshire, Maine, Texas, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.

CHL: The Central Hockey League consists of ten teams, {not be mistaken with the Canadian league, The Canadian Hockey League CHL}. Arizona Sundogs, Denver Cutthroats, & Quad City Mallards are some of the teams in this league. Regionally covering the following US states: Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, South Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, & Arizona.

All over Europe and Russia hockey leagues have already started their seasons. Do not worry hockey fans, there are plenty of games we can watch in the comfort of our own home theaters. Many of these teams have local TV coverage and with the NHL inactive, major networks like TSN and ESPN might pick up these other games. So until the NHL is back we still have exciting games we can watch this fall.

Gamers & Hockey Fans: NHL 13 Demo is Out Today

August 21st, 2012

As the popularity of gaming increases, more people are dedicating their home theater rooms to full gaming rooms or a hybrid of gaming and theater into one entertainment room. Our blog on June 18th, “Is Your Home Theater Room A Dedicated Gaming Room” discussed that very subject. In light of the popularity of gaming, we thought it would be great to mention that EA Sports has released a demo of NHL 13 for both Xbox and PS3 today.

New features to NHL 13 include True Performance Skating, EA Sports Hockey I.Q., Free Skate, create your ultimate fantasy team with Hockey Ultimate Team, and Hockey Moments Live, (where you can watch scenes from past games). This version allows the goalies to sprawl, dive, and move at a quicker pace then previous years. The clip below demonstrates the new feature, True Performance Skating. NHL 13 uses real-world physics to replicate the momentum a player uses when he starts to skate.

The demo features the Stanley Cup champions, the LA Kings and the team they beat, the New  Jersey Devils. Download the demo here and let us know what you think. With so many dedicated home theater game rooms being built, we can imagine the fun you and your friends will have playing NHL 13. The comments left by fellow gamers on the NHL 13 Facebook Page is relatively positive, fans like the new graphics and changes.

NHL 13 and a special Stanley Cup Collector’s Edition are set to be released on September 11, 2012 and can be pre-ordered here.

Give us your feedback on this or any other home theater related experience. We would love to hear it.
